Original brown gilt cloth, speckled edges; pp. xiv + 276; engraved frontispiece portrait after Ramsay, numerous engravings by Thomas and John Bewick, here printed on India paper and mounted; cloth a little rubbed with diagonal scratch to front, internally very clean, a very good copy. Provenance: A presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication leaf to Miss Bewick. On the facing page: "Note by Author/ I presented this copy to Bewick's daughter Jane in 1882/ when the book was first published./ It has apparently been in many hands, since her death./ I purchased it at a modest price/ from a Bookseller in London/ in June 1916./ D.C.L." Beneath this: "Oct. 6th. 1923./ Presented to my dear Youngest Son/ Lockett/ for his own Library/ David Croal Thomson/ Kenleith/ Highgate N.6."
First edition, this being one of 75 copies of the royal 4to issue, with the illustrations on India paper. "… the first coherent full-length biography, the fruit of much original research" (Roscoe p. xxii).
