BEMELMANS, Ludwig (author and illustrator). John BEMELMANS MARCIANO (illustrator). Madeline In America and Other Holiday Tales. London; Scholastic Ltd.. 1999.
Small folio. Original decorated covers of pictorially-backed matt red boards blocked in gilt, Santa Claus endpapers, in pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [vi], 7-111 + [i]; boldly and extravagantly illustrated in colour throughout; a fine, uninscribed copy protected by a very nearly fine, unclipped dustwrapper (£14.99) with minimal dusting to lower panel.
First UK edition. The first appearance in print of Madeline in America, a 44-page story worked up from Ludwig Bemelmans' manuscript papers and pencil sketches which were found among his files after his death. Bemelmans's grandson John Bemelmans Marciano takes on the mantle and completes the work by contributing his own full-colour paintings, in style. As a further tribute two additional holiday classics by Ludwig which previously appeared in earlier publications, The Count and the Cobbler and Sunshine (a timeless classic about a music teacher whose landlord tries to evict her on Christmas Eve) are collected here for the first time.
