BECKETT, Samuel (translator). An anthology of Mexican Poetry. London: Thames & Hudson. [1958].

8vo. Original cloth and wrapper; pp. 213, [i]; spine of wrapper slightly dulled, otherwise near fine.
First UK edition. Preface by C.M. Bowra. The poet Octavio Paz selected the poems that were passed to Beckett for translation, making this an unusual and important collabotation between two great writers. The book acts as a wonderful introduction to a literature that spans back to 1521. Paz also contributes a very useful essay on the history of Mexican poetry. For the Beckett fan, however, it is most fascinating as a display of his linguistic facility and his ability the leave the stamp of his authorial personality on anything he touched.
