The poet Octavio Paz selected the poems that were passed to Beckett for translation, making this an unusual and important collabotation between two great writers. The book acts as a wonderful introduction to a literature that spans back to 1521. Paz also contributes a very useful essay on the history of Mexican poetry. For the Beckett fan, however, it is most fascinating as a display of his linguistic facility and his ability the leave the stamp of his authorial personality on anything he touched.
