Glassco adds nine more chapters, including a scene at the opera, Venus reciting a litany of past lovers’ names, an evening of gambling in Gotha, a meeting with the Pope, and an alternate ending in which Tannhäuser is hanged for sport and revived by Venus’s kiss:. The story ends ‘”The fact is, my pet, there’s no dying allowed here, any more than there is being born. We just go on as we are, and I think it’s much nicer. Come on!
