BAGSTER, Samuel The Management of Bees. With a Description of the "Ladies' Safety Hive." Samuel Bagster and William Pickering, 1834.
8vo. Original green cloth, gilt morocco lettering piece to spine; xx + pp. 244, with a hand-coloured frontispiece, finished with gum arabic, of "The Queen, The Worker and the Drone Magnified", wood-engraved title vignette, and wood-engraved illustrations throughout; some scuffing to lettering piece, previous owner's stamp to ffep, very good.
First edition. This is an important addition to 19th century bee literature and Bagster's first work. It gives a comprehensive view of different methods of bee management and is especially interesting in its focus on apiarism as a suitable occupation for women. The book became highly popular and influential, and it remained in print until 1865 although the author himself died in 1835 at the age of thirty five.
