BADHAM, Charles David. A Treatise on Esculent Funguses of England. Lovell Reeve & Co 1863.
8vo. Publisher's green cloth, gilt vignette of mushrooms to front, gilt lettering to spine; pp. xvi + 152, + [16, ads]; with 21 hand-coloured plates of mushrooms, tissue guards; label of previous owner to front pastedown, very good.
Second edition. The author makes an impassioned plea that we should all get out and find these exquisite delicacies, which "from ignorance or prejudice, are left to perish ungathered." The author seems to see it as a matter of pride as "in France, Germany and Italy, Funguses constitute for weeks together the sole diet" and his role: "to call attention to an article of commerce elsewhere so lucrative, with us totally neglected."
