Original deep red linson boards pictorially blocked and lettered in gilt to spine and upper cover, pictorial endpapers, top edges red, with the pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [viii], + 191; with 16 full colour plates and line drawings throughout; a bright, clean copy with the tiniest knock at lower forecorner tip and a couple of minor indentations to bottom edge of upper cover, internally generally fresh with only one or two very minor marks, in a very good dustwrapper with light signs of handling and light lateral creasing at head.
First edition illustrated by Ardizzone. An attractive collection of Hans Andersen's most popular tales, including The Princess and the Pea; The Little Mermaid; The Emperor's New Clothes, Thumbelina; The Snow Queen; The Ugly Duckling and The Tinder Box. This was Ardizzone's final title. He was working on illustrations for it when he died, leaving artwork uncompleted on his drawing board.
