8vo. Contemporary calf; rebacked spine with raised bands and contrasting morocco labels, lettered and ruled in gilt; spine and boards opulently ornamented in blind; gauffered edges in gilt; pp. [ii], 266, mis-paginated, but complete in collation; small tear to calf at head of spine, and 2cm tear to hinge of upper board, with slight marks elsewhere on boards; outer corner of lower board coming away from endpaper slightly; previous bookseller's description tipped in to front paste-down; light even discolouration to endpapers, with a few light marks to text; a good example of this early printing of Apuleius's work.
First Aldine edition of a collection of Apuleius's works. This text includes 'Metamorphoses, sine lusus Asini libri xi,' as well as a variety of other treatises on Platonic philosophy, including 'Floridorum libri iv &c,' 'Liber de mundo ex lib, Aristotelis,' 'Alcinous, Isagogicus liber Platonicae philosophiae graece.' The works present in this volume feature The metamorphoses of Apuleius, or the Golden Asse, xi, a collection of passages from his speeches, translations of Aristotles arguments into Latin, excerpts from Apuleius's revered work Apologies, and summaries of Platonic philosophy. The Latin translation of this work conducted by 'a certain Bishop of Tropicus (Tropicensis)' (p. i).
