Originally started as the Governors residence, where four Governors would eventually live.
The Hotel opened in 1877 and during the Second World War was commandered as a supply base and Military hospital by the British Army.
In 1957 a number of scenes in the film "Bridge on the river Kwai" were shot at the Hotel.
