Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, covers ruled and ornamented in blind; pp. xix, 540, frontispiece, wood cut illustrations in the text and on plates; endpapers renewed; occasional light toning; a very good copy; provenance: stamp of the Brazilian Society of English Culture (1930s) on title-verso, ownership inscription, dated 1871 on dedication leaf.
Second or third printing of this report of what began as a natural history collecting expedition to Brazil. Both Agassiz' collected specimens for Agassiz's natural history museum at Harvard. It was one of the famous scientific expeditions up the Amazon with most of it written by Mrs. Agassiz, kept in a diary. The book, however gives us a good insight into society and life in Brasil in 1865.
