First edition. Alexander Agassiz (1835-1910) was the son of Louis Agassiz, the famed zoologist,and became a distinguished marine icthyologist as well as a mining expert. He worked on the classification of the findings of the 1872 Challenger expedition, made important surveys of Lake Titicaca and the Great Barrier Reef and sailed on the three dredging trips of the Blake, during which he came up with important objections to Darwin's theory on the formation of coral reefs.
