Publisher's mint green cloth prettily patterned and panelled in Art Nouveau style in salmon pink, black, paler green, brighter green and gilt to spine and upper board, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; pp. [iv], v-xi + 316 (including index); with a total of 75 fine coloured plates protected by captioned guards and a folding map of the county, printed in sepia, tipped in to rear; a fine and attractive copy, both externally and internally, with only a touch of fading to spine, internally clean and crisp throughout with the usual offset browning to free endpapers, light speckling to edges of book block, and with a neat ex libris label to inner upper cover.
First edition,with dated title-page, in second issue binding, without adverts.at rear. "A. & C. Black's Twenty Shilling series of colour plate books, published from 1901 onwards, brought the world into the home at a time when travel, especially overseas, was much more difficult than it is today. For the first time books containing large numbers of colour plates - up to 100 per volume - were made avaialble to the public at an affordable price" (Inman 34).
