NITSCHE, Erik. La Mamounia, Hotel Transatlantique, Marrakech.

Original Hotel luggage label, printed by Le Service Typographique, c.1930. 160 x 95 mm.
This label was designed in 1929 by Erik Nitsche. He was born in Lausanne in 1908 and designed covers and illustrations for magazines. Hired in Paris by Maximillian Vox to work for Le Service Typographique, he moved to U.S.A in 1934. Then worked for Life and Harpers Bazaar magazines.
Nitsche produced about 20 labels but without doubt the prize of the set is the design for Hotel La Mamounia.
The Moroccan railway company opened the Hotel in 1923. They employed French Architects Henri Prost and Antoine Marchisio whose design was a mix of Art Deco and Moroccan.
Through the years the Hotel has hosted countless celebrites including Churchill, who used to paint here during the Winter months, Charlie Chaplin and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Very rare.
