In 1933 the British government agreed to provide assistance to both Cunard and White Star who were in dire financial trouble.
The governments condition was that they merge their North Atlantic operations.
In 1947 Cunard managed to acquire White Stars share in the company and in 1949 the company dropped the White Star name and it was renamed Cunard Line.
This was one of the first labels of the newly formed company.
