Original luggage label, c.1935. 125 x 145 mm.
On 1st June 1889 the first direct train to Constantinople left Paris and two years later in 1891 it was officially renamed the Orient Express.
In 1919 the Simplon tunnel is completed and the Simplon Orient Express taking a Southerly route via Milan, Venice and Belgrade to Constantinople starts.
Both routes operated at the same time. The Wagon Lits company built the Pera Palace Hotel in Constantinople in 1894, specifically to cater for the Orient Express passengers.
The Orient Express ceased operating in 1971.
