First two volume edition, published in the same year as the one volume edition, much rarer than the latter, and probably produced for lending libraries. 'Burkhardt's authentic and interesting account of the places which he visited, of the extraordinary ceremonies which he witnessed, and of the people among whom he lived in the character of a Muselman' (Preface of the Editor).
John Lewis Burckhardt (1784-1817), a Swiss scholar and explorer, travelled throughout North Africa and the Middle East for seven years. He was famed for his rediscovery of Petra in Jordan, and travelled extensively as an Arab using the name Sheikh Ibrahim in Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Egypt, and Nubia, and accompanied the hajj as a Muslim pilgrim to Mecca. These two volumes detail Burckhardt's journey to Mecca in 1814, and then onto Medina in 1815, and were edited and published posthumously, after his death in 1817.
