8vo., 3 vols; brown cloth gilt to spine (Book of Evidence); black boards lettered in silver (Ghosts) and gilt (Athena) to spines; all in the original pictorial dust jackets; pp. [vi], 3-219, [i], [x], 3-244, [iv] and [vi], 232, [ii] respectively; near-fine copies all, aside from the usual even toning to the pages; the lower fore-edge of 'The Book of Evidence' has sustained some indentation, underneath the jacket.
First editions, signed by Banville to all title pages. The Book of Evidence follows the life of 38-year-old scientist, who murders a servant girl during an attempt to steal a painting from a neighbour.Ghosts was the sequel, his 9th book, and the second in what Banville described as a "triptych", to mark "an investigation of the way in which the imagination works." It was followed by Athena, in which "a woman steps out of her lover's canvasses."
