DARWIN, Charles Robert. The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. John Murray, 1898.

8vo. Original green cloth gilt; pp. xxi + 432; one folding chart; very fresh internally, very good. Provenance: front pastedown with bookplate of Stones Wesleyan Mutual Improvement Society, a clearly very forward thinking Methodist organisation based in Soyland, West Yorkshire.
Sixth edition (fifty-first thousand). The source of much controversy in its day, Darwin's seminal text remains one of the most important works of the 19th century. First published in 1859, the work had gone through 6 editions by 1872. The sixth, final 'life-time' edition is of importance, since it is the first to use the term "evolution" in its text.
