The earth has music for those who listen
No one really knows who came up with that phrase. It might be Santayana; it definitely isn't Shakespeare. It doesn't really matter, though, because it is lovely and it sums up this week's instalment in our exploration of the elements. The earth underpins everything we do. More than any other element, we take it for granted. It is born from the action of terrifying forces over unimaginable expanses of time, but we tame it into vegetable gardens and flower plots. It provides our food and our raw materials, it forms the physical framework of our lives, and its landscapes feed our need for beauty
