ADLINGTON, WILLIAM Cupid and Psyches. The excellent narration of their marriage translated into English by William Adlington out of the Latine Bookes of the Golden Asse by Apuleius, 1566. Soho: The Nonesuch Press, 1923.

Tall thin 8vo., publisher's maroon paper-backed cream boards, backstrip lettered in gilt; with a star design stamped in red; matching slipcase and endpapers; also complete in the publisher's original glassine; text printed in black throughout, with decorative borders and title page; pp. [72]; aside from the odd spot internally, a lovely fresh copy, slipcase rubbed at foot, the glassine browned and a little creased, as expected.
Limited to 625 numbered copies, this no. 289. Adlington's translation of the XI Bookes of the Golden Asse was first published in 1566. This text is taken from the 1639 reprint, in which the spelling was "slightly and comfortably modified". The borders were designed by Geoffrey Troy circa 1524 ("here enlarged a little").
