He unites in this volume, which was published to raise funds for the reconstruction of a Polish church near Vilnius, two translations of Pushkin, excerpts from Byron, essays on music and literature. Most contributors were Poles living in the Russian Empire outside Poland, the majority in Saint Petersburg, one in Orenburg (north of the Caspian Sea), one in the Caucasus region, and one as far north as Petrozavodsk in Karelia. A list of subscribers contains the names of about 500 Polish readers, residents of Poland or in exile. By the age of eleven he was already contributing to the \u003ci\u003eBristol Journal\u003c\/i\u003e under the editorship of Felix Farley. He applied himself so assiduously to his studies that he soon began producing mature work which \u003cstrong\u003ehe claimed to be the recently discovered writings of an imaginary fifteenth-century monk and poet, Thomas Rowley.\u003c\/strong\u003e Chatterton soon attracted the attention of antiquaries such as William Barrett, to whom he supplied transcripts of Rowley’s works for scholarly investigation.
