Gary Snyder's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic of ecological poetry, Turtle Island, includes his pioneering manifesto, "Four Changes", influential in it’s teachings on environmental awareness and ever more pressing today. Describing the collections name, Snyder writes that Turtle Island is "the old / new name for the continent, based on many creation myths of the people who have been here for millennia, and reapplied by some of them to ‘North America’ in recent years".
