MAUNSELL, F. R. Eastern Turkey in Asia. Baghdad. Sheet 39. London, Printed at the War Office, January, 1915.

Folding lithographic map printed in black and green with red line colouring, linen-backed, measuring 65 x 82 cm; minor light spotting, title printed onto linen-backing; provenance: early pencil inscription in the margin, reading This map belonged to Sir Charles Berry Cusack-Smith who commanded a R.A. unit in Mesopotamia, later he was a governor of Brighton College.
First printing to show the Baghdad Railway of this very rare small-scale map of the area surrounding Baghdad, based on Sir W. Willcock's surveys published in Simla in 1913 in Report of a Tour in Turkish Arabia, Kurdistan etc, by Mr. Lorimer, Political Resident in Baghdad and others. The map indicates the surface of the deserts surrounding the Iraqi capital, gives details such as Mud walls partly destroyed, historic landmarks, traces of ancient canals. The map also shows a trunk of the unfinished Baghdad Railway leading Northwest towards Tikrit. Francis Richard Maunsell had been in the Middle East since the late 1880s and published in the RGS, as well as a few monographs on Kurdistan, oil and the Hejaz Railway.
