Errol le Cain (1941-1989) made his first animated "short" at the age of fourteen and continued a career in graphic design for advertising and film. He also worked on set design for the BBC. In 1968 he published this, his first illustrated book for children, commenting at the time that this foray into the field “made me aware of the scope and possibilities in children's books and now I am convinced this is the medium for me”. He went on to illustrate forty-eight books for children and won the Kate Greenaway Medal for illustration in 1985 for Hiawatha's Childhood, after two previous nominations.
