In 1939, the irreverent Marcel Duchamp, the great actor of the Dada movement, began work on a 'Portable Museum'; a collection comprised of all his most famous miniature works, including paintings, drawings and readymades.
In January 1941, he created La Boîte-en-valise (Box in a Valise): a cardboard box that fitted inside it sixty-nine miniature replicas and reproductions of his works. Until his death in 1968, there followed six further editions which included additional items and varied in their presentation.
Marcel Duchamp: The Portable Museum delves deep into the lineage of Marcel's box and documents Duchamp's revolutionary miniature project with 516 full-page illustraions, (164 in colour). The book makes accessible a crucial work of twentieth-century art, showcasing its resonance with the wider public decades after its creation.
