Contemporary red morocco, covers with outer dog-tooth roll border surrounding floral roll border, spines gilt in compartments with raised bands, comb-marbled endpapers, gilt edges; pp. [1236]; woodcut tailpieces; extremities lightly rubbed, hinges fragile; some light spotting and off-setting to title-page, close tear to lower edge of Hh9, but a very clean, crisp copy. Provenance: contemporary ownership inscription ‘Elizth Ball, Her Book, Anno Domini 1775’ to front free endpapers; mid twentieth-century book plate of Robert J. Hayhurst to front pastedown of vol. I.
A Cambridge pocket Bible printed by John Archdeacon, University Printer from 1766 to 1793, in a charming contemporary binding. The script is followed by a brief History of the Bible Epitomised, and a table. Originally owned by Elizabeth Ball, this copy was later included in the collection of Robert J. Hayhurst (1929-2016) of Nelson, Lancashire. Owner of the retail pharmacies John Hayhurst & Son, Hayhurst was a keen collector of eighteenth-century books in fine contemporary bindings.
