ATWOOD, Margaret The Handmaid's Tale Boston, Houghton, Mifflin Company, 1986

8vo. Original blue cloth backed grey boards, title in gilt lettering on spine with grey endpapers and an illustrated dust jacket by French Marcellino; includes original publishers 'Book Card'; pp.[10] 3-311 [1]; slight sunned to edges of boards with a midly toned dust jacket, not price clipped. Nicked at bottoms of spine. Stamped on half-title with previous owners library embossed stamp. Near fine.
This is the first UK edition with the scarce promotional postcard loosely inserted of Atwood's classic dystopian vision, a novel originally published in her native Canada in 1985. It has become her most popular and best-known novel, due to its chilling depiction of life for women in a totalian society facing the threat of a declining birthrate. It is a terrifyingly real evocation of the realities of 21st century America written way ahead of its time.
The Handmaids Tale is a modern classic, winner of the Arthur C. Clarke award in 1985 and adapted into a highly popular television series (2017).
