DETAILLE, Édouard. Les grandes manœuvres de l'armée russe. Souvenir du camp de Krasnoé-Sélo 1884. Paris, Boussod, Valadon & Cie. and Saint-Petersburg, Velten, 1886.
Imperial folio (48 x 35 cm). Original grey half-cloth over printed boards with vignette; pp. 32, highly illustrated, including 6 full-page wood-engravings and vignette on title; boards a little worn and spotted, offsetting from endpapers to half-title and much less to title, and to last leaf, inoffensive crease marks to upper outer corners.
Very rare first edition of this splendid pictorial and almost poetic memento of the Imperial Army manoeuvre in the vicinity of the recreational suburb of the capital, where the Emperor oversaw the annual military exercise. The French academic painter and military artist Detaille, renowned for his precision, designed in 1912 the new uniforms of the French army and after his death bequeathed an impressive collection of uniforms and other militaria to the Musée de l'Armée in Paris.
