ELZEVIER. Russia seu Moscovia itemque Tartaria. Commentario topographico atque politico illustratae. Leiden, Elzevier, 1630.

12mo. Contemporary Italian vellum with yapp edges, spine lettered in ink; pp. 327, [9], engraved title within pagination, inside front cover with traces of worming, title with tiny paperflaw, otherwise fine; provenance: 18th-century Italian collector's stamp Biblioteca Giovannini on rear fly-leaf.
First edition, one of two printings in the same year, of this topography of Russia, the Baltic and Black Sea regions, compiled from various sources, sometimes attributed to the linguist Boxhorn. Important excerpts are from the fragmentary De moribus tartarorum, lituanorum et moscorum, ascribed to one unidentified Michael the Lithuanian. More recent research ties this work to the Lithauanian envoy to the Crimean Tartars, Michał Tyszkiewicz. Another text in this volume is an ethnographic essay on the Samoieds.
