PRIOR, James. Memoir of the life and character of the Right Hon. Edmund Burke; with specimens of his poetry and letters, and an estimate of his genius and talents, compared with those of his contemporaries. Baldwin, Cradock and Joy. 1824.

8vo. Contemporary quarter half calf, marbled boards; pp. xxiv + 584, frontispiece portrait and 1 plate illustrating Burke's handwriting; plate considerably foxed, otherwise very good.
First edition. Prior (1790- 1869) was a surgeon who made his name as a writer. He was possibly drawn to Burke as a fellow Irishman and this book became his most famous work, running to several editions and winning high praise: "Mr Prior though somewhat, perhaps, too enthusiastic a biographer, gives a good estimate of the moral, political and literary character of Mr Burke, which indeed it is difficult to praise too highly… Something of this sort has long been wanted" (The Quarterly Review, Volume 31, 1825).
