HUXLEY, Thomas Henry Diary of the Voyage of H.M.S. Rattlesnake. Chatto & Windus. 1935.
8vo. Publisher's cloth and scarce dustwrapper; pp. viii + 372, 12 plates, 1 folding map; chipping to dustwrapper, otherwise very good.
First edition. This volume, edited by Julian Huxley, reproduces the great naturalists's previously unpublished manuscripts written on his voyage to the eastern coast of Australia. Huxley was in his early twenties at the time and serving as a medical officer; this book reveals his ambitions as a scientist. Many of the plates are reproduced from Huxley's own pencil drawings, revealing that he was also a gifted draughtsman.
