This account of an English shipwreck survivor is partly based on the true story of Eliza Fraser, who was shipwrecked off the coast of Queensland in 1836, and subsequetly had Fraser Island was named after her. She too had met with an escaped convict who had lived alongside the island's aboriginal people, as in this plotline.
