True first edition,'First printing' stated to the copyright page. This the MGM Vault Copy, kept as reference by the studio subsequent to the film's release. Stamped VAULT COPY to the front jacket panel, front panel, front endpaper and title page. Also stamped 'Metro Goldwyn Mayer/ Library/ Culver City' on the rectos of the front and rear endpapers, the title page, and the lower margin of pages 51, 123, 159 and 179.
Developed concurrently with Stanley Kubrick's film of the same name, the book was published after the release of the film, and went on to sell over three million copies by 1992. The film was praised for its scientifically accurate depiction of spaceflight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery, and went on to win four academy awards.
