8vo. Publisher's crimson cloth lettered in gilt to spine, in pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [xii], 13-237; a fine copy, both externally and internally, with just the tiniest dink to bottom edge of upper cover and a previous owner's neatly written name to front free endpaper, protected by a fine, unclipped dustwrapper (10s 6d) with just faint dusting, mild abrasions to spine ends, 2 tiny closed nicks to spine ends and 1 corner and a very short (5mm) and barely noticeable closed tear to upper panel at top edge.
First UK edition of the debut work by one of the first-published, and finest, West African authors, Ekwensi's coming-of-age novel about a young man trying to establish himself as band man and crime reporter in the Nigerian city of Lagos was the second published book in the legendary Heinemann African Writers Series, following Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart which was actually published four years later, in 1958. One British critic at the time noted that this episodic noir thriller, in which Lagos is a central character, said more about west Africa than 50 government reports.
