LAWRENCE, T.E. Revolt in the Desert. London, Jonathan Cape, 1927.
Large 8vo. Original brown cloth; pp. 445, sketch and portrait monochrome illustrations, fold-out map to rear, order form for Doughty's Arabia Deserta tipped in at p, 434 and loosely inserted at the beginning; minimal fading around the edges, the blank loose tissue guards removed to prevent browning, minimal offsetting to endpapers, otherwise very good.
First edition, first printing. Abridged version of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, published the year after the subscriber's edition of the full text to make the book more accessible and to pay off the debts incurred in the original production process. Lawrence objected vociferously to the amount of pruning necessary to produce a profitable book for sale to the public, and utilised a contractual clause to halt sales of Revolt in England once his debt had been paid.
