PEAKE, Mervyn (illustrator). Lewis CARROLL (author). Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Stockholm; Zephyr Books, The Continental Book Company. 1946.
8vo. Original buff pictorial card covers, in repeat pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [viii], 9-347 + [v]; illustrated with 66 line drawings, many of which are full-page; a fine and exceptional copy, both externally and internally, with none of the usual vertical creasing to the spine, with a small, and neat, contemporary ownership inscription to half-title, protected by a fine dustwrapper with slight fading of spine lettering and 3 tiny nicks to head of spine.
First edition illustrated by Peake and an important interpretation of this classic work for the collector. Unusually first printed and issued in Sweden, but in English. The English edition itself did not appear for another eight years, when it was published with one fewer illustration and with several of the originals changed or redrawn. The book declares its specificity on the lower cover: "Not to be introduced into the British Empire or the U.S.A."
