Original warm brown buckram, bevelled boards, blocked with an owl in darker brown to upper cover, lettered gilt to spine and upper board, all edges gilt, pictorial orange endpapers; pp. ; strikingly illustrated throughout with bold black and white text illustrations and 14 coloured plates printed in glorious lithographed colours; both externally and internally fresh and clean with some rubbing to edges and corners and a neat ink inscription, dated April 1903, to blank verso of frontispiece.
First edition thus, with dark brown pictorial endpapers, a pictorial publisher's advertisement for Brooke's The Nursery Rhyme Book to verso of half-title, and no other books listed there. A handsome production combining Leslie Brooke's illustrated work in Pelican Chorus and The Jumblies to produce one volume of Lear's Nonsense
