[JAPAN] DENING, Walter (author). Japan In Days of Yore I. Human Nature In A Variety Of Aspects. Part I. Tokyo; The Hakubunsha. 1887.

12mo. Original pictorial paper wrappers; pp. [xii], i-iv + 87 + [iv], publisher's adverts.printed on folded leaves, many crisply split at fore-edge; complete with 6 double-page coloured wood-engraved plates; a worn, broken, and disbound, copy, lacking stitiching, with dust-soiling and substantial chipping and edge-wear to both covers; internally generally very clean with only a few minor marks and with an old worm-track to inner margin of 7 leaves (longest 4.8cm and confined to inner margin) and one shorter worm track (7mm) to inner margin of one double-plate (not touching image); scarce.
First edition, text in English. Part I only in a series of 6 announced in the publisher's advertisement at the rear as "English works to be published by The Hakubunsha" forming Japan in Days of Yore, to contain illustrations by well-known artists. Only the first four parts have been confirmed as having been published, with no evidence of the appearance of parts V and VI. A contemporary reviewer for The Bookmart volume VI, Pittsburgh, June 1888 to 1889 commented "The book are thoroughly Japanese in form …The illustrations, by Japanese artists are wonderfully good … The drawing is superb, and very few colors are made to yield effects which would puzzle our chromo-lithographers to produce."
The folk tale of Goto Hanshiro who devoted his life to others. It tells of his encounters with thieves and other events which led to his appearance before O-oka Echizen-no-Kami, the Governor of Edo.
