JANSSON, Tove (illustrator). Lewis CARROLL (author). Alice I Underlandet. Stockholm; Albert Bonniers. 1966.
Large 8vo. Original brown cloth with gilt roundel to upper board, lettered in gilt to spine, preserved in white pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [vi], 7-111 + [i]; with line-illustrations throughout in profusion, including 11 coloured images (1 full-page); a fine and exceptional copy, without inscription, protected by an equally fine dustwrapper (Pris: 23:50) with just a touch of light uniform toning.
First edition thus, with illustrations by Tove Jansson and text in Swedish. This idiosyncratic and ethereal interpretation of Alice's adventures is particularly Scandinavian in tone. Tove Jansson is best known as the creator of the Moomin books, which began with Comet in Momminland in 1946. Although born in Finland, the author wrote principally in Swedish.
