Original dark green polished cloth lettered gilt to spine and upper board with neat pictorial vignette in cream and black to upper board, pictorial upper endpaper in sepia, as issued, top edges olivine, others uncut; pp. [viii] + 302; illustrated with a black and white frontispiece by Graham Robertson and 10 coloured plates by Bransom; a very good and attractive copy with a small bruise to lower forecorner of upper cover, externally bright and unrubbed, internally clean and attractive with some marginal offset-toning to front free endpaper, occaasional light scattered foxing to text leaves and untrimmed edges of book block, final blank with vertical crease, without ownership marks or inscriptions.
First illustrated edition of this great classic: first published in 1908 with only the black-and-white frontispiece by Graham Robertson, which reappears here. The book was later illustrated (in its early years) by Nancy Barnhart (1922), Wyndham Payne (1927), and E.H. Shepard (1931).
