FAIRY TALE - [LADY WATERFORD] (illustrator). The Babes In The Wood. London; Sampson, Low, Son & Co. 1861.
8vo. Original purple cloth heavily embossed in blind, with a pretty lettering device in gilt to upper cover, all edges gilt, original matt yellow endpapers; ff. ; with chromolithographed title and 9 other plates printed in colours on card by William Dickes, presented in the style of a medieval manuscript, with blank interleaved guards; an attractive copy with slight soiling to cloth and rubbing to extremities; internally very good throughout, with neat hinges; possibly sometime invisibly expertly, and recased, due to the inadequacies of the original gutta percha binding with either the original, or very early endpapers; externally lightly dusted and marked with some slight fading to edges, internally generally clean and sharp with occasional slight foxing, mainly to first and last couple of leaves.
Early edition. First published by Joseph Cundall in 1848; here with re-engraved plates in reduced size, printed by woodblock (see McLean Victorian Design & Colour Printing, pp. 142 and 146).
