DURRELL, Gerald (author). Ralph THOMPSON (illustrator). A Zoo In My Luggage. London; Rupert Hart-Davis. 1960.
8vo. Original navy blue linson boards lettered in silver to spine, preserved in pink pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [vi], 7-205; with illustrations throughout in line, by Thomson; a bright copy tiny bruising to top forecorners of boards, internally fresh, clean and uninscribed, protected by an attractive, unclipped dustwrapper (16s) with some fading to spine and shadowed marginal lightening to lower panel, with nicking and small abrasions to spine ends, with 3 short closed tears to top edge (longest 2cm) and another (2cm) to bottom edge of upper panel, all expertly repaired to the verso with archival tissue and unremarkable.
First edition of an early Durrell title, and one of the most elusive. A typically humorous account of how Durrell began to assemble his zoo, chronicling his rare animal-seeking expedition to West Africa, his tussles with the local council over possible locations, and his temporary construction of a marquee in his back garden, all regaled with his familiar light-heaerted wit, taking delight in the 'antics of animals and the oddities of man'.
