8vo. Original salmon pink linson boards gilt, pictorial endpapers, preserved in white pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [viii], 9-160; illustrated throughout in line; a very good, clean copy with some fading to top edge of boards and a tiny brown spot (2mm) to upper cover; internally fresh and uninscribed with slight offset-toning to verso of free endpapers and half-title; protected by a very attractive, price-clipped dustwrapper with a faint strip of toning along top edges and pale foxing to flaps, more visible on the reverse.
First edition. The first in the series of Uncle books, viewed by many as modern children's classics: "Uncle is an elephant. He's immensely rich, and he's a B.A. He dresses well, generally in a purple dressing-gown, and often rides about on a traction engine, which he prefers to a car" (opening lines of the book).
