COMPTON, E.T Harrison and E. Harrison COMPTON (illustrators) J. F. DICKIE (described by). Germany. London, A. & C. Black, 1912.
Large 8vo.; publisher's orange/tan cloth elaborately and emblematically blocked in black, orange, white and gilt to spine and upper cover, lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; pp. x + 227; with a total of 75 fine coloured plates after watercolours by Dickie, all protected by captioned guards; a fine and exceptional copy with previous owner's bookplate to inner upper cover and slight blistering to endpaper at inner upper hinge; a scarce title in the series.
First, and sole, edition, presented here in the superior first issue binding, with gilt extra. In view of the unstable political situation in Europe at the time this title was a very slow seller. Unsold copies were presumably pulped at the outbreak of World War I, especially in consideration of the nationalistic Imperial Germano-Prussian eagle design and the depiction of the Iron Cross to the spine.
