Because the group was so small lessons with him used to take place in his study, a shady room overlooking the Orangery at Stowe with two big square stuffed chairs side by side facing the fireplace, book shelves around the room and pipes and tobacco, I seem to remember, in considerable profusion on the tables… Tim was very like the self-portrait of Van Gogh wearing a hat.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe goes on: \"Tim was then I suppose in his late twenties and a fairy Bohemian figure even by Stowe standards which were not noticeably strict. He had an old open black Bentley and a red setter and among the boys enjoyed a reputation exciting, faintly discreditable and much envied on the strength of 'Loved Helen' and 'They Winter Abroad', copies of which were eagerly sought after.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eda Silva goes on to describe two incidences where White was involved in car accidents. This text, of Pollington's travels, is an 'almost exact transcription of a diary, kept during the interval between August 1865 and April 1866' (Preface). Presented here is the author's own voice in its entirety, with 'no after thoughts; no descriptions of the origins of peoples, or the former state of places,' with nothing extracted from encyclopaedias, it is purely Pollington's own account. The author also adds, 'the names of places and persons are in almost every sense spelt phonetically' (\u003ci\u003ePreface\u003c\/i\u003e). Viscount Pollington had been the travelling companion with Kinglake in the Ottoman Empire in the 1830s and some of Kinglake's style of writing seems to have rubbed off. Methley is a knowledgeable classical scholar with 'the practical sagacity of a Yorkshireman'. - This journey from London leads Pollington through Russia and the Caucasus to Anatolia, Iraq and Persia. Joseph Vaz (1651–1711), known as the ‘Apostle of Ceylon’ and canonised in 2015, was born in Goa into the Brahmin caste. He was educated by the Jesuits in Goa, ordained priest in 1676, and became confessor to D. Rodrigo da Costa, the Governor of Portuguese India. His early missionary career took him to Coastal Karnataka, where he came into conflict with the Propaganda Fide led by Thomas de Castro, bishop of Fulsivelem (c.1621–1684). Vaz negotiated a truce between the Roman authority and the Portuguese Church, appealing to both Castro’s and his own Brahmin background. In 1686 he joined the Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip of Neri, and the following year became a clandestine Catholic missionary in Sri Lanka, at the time under the control of the Protestant Dutch East India Company who had expelled the Portuguese in 1658. The Dutch authorities imprisoned him as a Portuguese spy, and only through the intervention of the Buddhist King of Candia, Vimaladharmasuriya II, who became his friend, was he released.
