In 1883, when he was just 23, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote The Narrative of John Smith while he was living in Portsmouth and struggling to establish himself as both a doctor and a writer. He had already succeeded in having a number of short stories published in leading magazines of the day, such as Blackwood’s, All the Year Round, London Society, and the Boy’s Own Paper – but as was the accepted practice of literary journals of the time, his stories had been published anonymously. Thus, Conan Doyle knew that in order to truly establish his name as a writer, he would have to write a novel. That novel – the first he ever wrote and only now published for the first time – is The Narrative of John Smith.

Many of the themes and stylistic tropes of his later writing, including his first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet (published in 1887) can be clearly seen. More a series of ruminations than a traditional novel, The Narrative of John Smith is of considerable biographical importance and provides an exceptional window into the mind of the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Through John Smith, a 50 year-old man confined to his room by an attack of gout, Conan Doyle sets down his thoughts and opinions on a range of subjects – including literature, science, religion, war, and education – with no detectable insecurity or diffidence.

Though unfinished, The Narrative of John Smith stands as a fascinating record of the early work of a man on his way to becoming one of the best-known authors in the world.

SKU: 2078233

ERTUG, Ahmet. Aphrodisias was a free and autonomous city within the Roman province of Asia, in Western Turkey. It was best known for the sanctuary of its patron goddess, Aphrodite, and for its marble sculptors. The community prospered under the early and middle Roman empire (first-second centuries AD), when it built a complete set of marble buildings that made the town a proper city in ancient eyes. Aphrodisias sheds valuable light on interaction between Greek and Roman identity, the functioning of empire, religious conflict and accommodation, and transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Aphrodisian sculptors are known to have worked abroad on prestigious commissions, for example, at Hadrian’s villa at Tivoli.

The surviving body of sculpture is rich and varied. There are statues of gods, heroes, emperors, benefactors, philosophers, and athletes, as well as mythological groups, decorative figures, and ornamental and figured relief sculptures. Many of the key pieces occupy key positions in the history of Roman art. The sculpture of the city is a legacy of unrivalled importance in this field. The archaeology of Aphrodisias gives a fuller, more vivid picture of later classical art in its ancient context than is possible at any other site.

Text by Prof. R.R.R. With textual commentary by Randall McLeod.

"Holinshed's Chronicles", best known as one of Shakespeare's major sources, contains one of the few accounts of Elizabeth's reign written during her lifetime. A contemporary history, it was subjected to censorship by the Privy Council. In this facsimile edition, a compilation based on this portion of the "Chronicles" in copies in the Huntington's collection as well as the British Library and Cambridge University Library, censored and substituted passages are represented between two covers for the first time. Professor Clegg provides a historical introduction and demonstrates that the censorship took place in three stages. Libraries around the world will be able to identify and describe the copies in their own collections based on the information provided. The "Chronicles", a scrupulously produced monument to Elizabeth, is also a rich source for the study of printing practices. The base text is an unusual copy in the Huntington Library containing the largest sample of proofmarkings that survive from the sixteenth century. Professor McLeod analyzes these in his textual commentary, along with the typography, demonstrating how the book was printed and explaining the roles of compositor and corrector in the sixteenth-century printing house

SKU: 2077739

Hulsbergh after Colen Campbell (1676-1729).
