Original red cloth, decorated and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, chrome-yellow endpapers, pp. 24, text entirely printed in lilac, ten steel-engravings with tissue guards, apart from very light bubbling to cloth, and two engravings with very minor foxing a fine copy; school prize inscription, dated 1860, inside front cover.
Rare first edition. Posthumously published, this is one of the last works by the topographical artist and traveller in the Middle East, Bartlett, who had died in 1854 on a French steamer on the way back from Asia Minor and was buried at sea.
