Landscape 4to.; strikingly bound in quarter midnight blue wide-weave cloth-backed marbled paper-covered boards in purple and blue with onlaid paper lettering label to spine; pp. [viii], 9-198 + [iii], on fine gloss paper; illustrated throughout with beautiful coloured plates after paintings by Cole, most full-page; fine, as new.
First edition, one of only 500 copies, including chapters entitled "Malta, letters home, a naval attack, Sicily"; "Flying bombs, Normandy and Cairo"; "Greece, coping with atrocities and an orphanage"; "More atrocities in Belsen Death Camp; "Japanese surrender;, in Changi Gaol" and "Borneo, illnes, war trials and home again".
Leslie James Cole (1910-1976) was a fine, and underraed British war artist who worked from 1942 to 1946 recording events from various theatres of war, including the liberation of the Bergen-Belsen concentratioin camp. His mid-century style is reminiscent that of Eric Ravilious and John and Paul Nash.
